Recommended Retest Date

Some reagents are assigned a recommended retest date rather than a strict expiration date.

Products Without an Expiration or Retest Date

Certain highly stable chemicals do not carry either an expiration date or a recommended retest date.

While proper storage extends reagent stability, effective inventory management is equally important in preventing unnecessary reagent expiration.

Laboratories should implement practices such as:

  • Applying the First-Expired, First-Out (FEFO) inventory system.
  • Regularly monitoring reagent expiration dates.
  • Purchasing reagents based on realistic consumption rates.
  • Maintaining accurate inventory records.
  • Performing routine inspections of stored chemicals.
  • Removing deteriorated or contaminated reagents promptly.

These practices help minimize waste, reduce operational costs, and ensure that only suitable reagents are used for laboratory testing.


Best Practices Before Using an Expired Reagent

Before considering the use of an expired reagent, laboratories should evaluate:

  • Storage history and environmental conditions.
  • Container integrity.
  • Evidence of discoloration, precipitation, crystallization, or contamination.
